MILITARY: Air Force Airman Samantha D. Martin graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. The airman, 2008 graduate of Fairview High School in Ashland is daughter of Mary Whitt of Ashland.
DANCE: Home Magnet makes the calls during the Paw Taw Square Dance Club's monthly dance from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church. Charlene Salyers is the cuer.
FIRST TIME: It's a first time the chuckles in this column have been compared to a cup of coffee. Anne R. Cummings mailed this note: "Read your column and some of your "jokes" are better than a cup of strong coffee to start the day." This native Lincoln County girl thanks this reader for that comment and, of course, for reading the columns and jokes.
SERVICE: Judy Lambert was recognized for her long years of teaching in the primary department at Madison Avenue Christian Church. Congratulations Judy for 40-plus years of helping "little ones" mature into the word and work of the Lord.
LUNCHEON: Woman's Club of Huntington offers a luncheon meeting at noon Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Guyan Golf and Country Club. The speaker/entertainer is Danilo Moraes, Marshall University student on a scholarship majoring in music. The accomplished classical guitarist is from Brazil.
BAZAAR: Mays Chapel United Methodist Church offers its annual fall bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the church, Beech Fork Road, Lavalette. Arts, crafts, baked goods and more are available. Lunch consisting of hot dogs, beans, cornbread, desserts and drinks is served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WATCH: Watch out, South Side Neighborhood Organization meets at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the Junior League Community Building to discuss "Neighborhood Watch" Sign Program. Guest speakers are Capt. FORUM: The third annual author forum, allowing customers to meet and interact with multiple authors throughout West Virginia and the Tri-State in one setting, is offered from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Empire Books and News. The event is conducted in conjunction with the first National Bookstore Day, sponsored by Publishers Weekly. Authors have their books available for purchase and signing. Attendees may bring in five nonperishable items for Empire Books' food drive this month and receive 10 percent off the day's purchase. Food donations are given to the local mission.
CIRCUS: The circus is coming to town this weekend. The Beni Kedem Shrine circus is set for 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov, 7, at Veterans Memorial Field House. Shows also begin at 1 and 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, at Charleston Civic Center. Tickets are $15 and $10 per child ages 12 and younger. Tickets are available at Kmart stores or at the gate.
